Painters in North Vancouver

Celestial Painting serves North Vancouver from our base on Sophia Street in Vancouver, and has served the Lower Mainland for more than 25 years. We take on house painting, commercial painting and industrial painting across North Vancouver, from the waterfront terminals to the older houses around Central Lonsdale. North Vancouver is two municipalities, the City and the District, and each sets its own working hours, so this page covers both. Call (604) 374-0000 for a free estimate, or read on for what applies to your property.

Industrial Painting Around Low Level Road, Neptune Terminals and the Vancouver Shipyards

Two painters in hard hats on a rope scaffold rolling green paint onto a large wall

The working waterfront shapes industrial painting in North Vancouver. Seaspan describes its Vancouver Shipyards as the prime site for building the complex vessels under Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy, for the Canadian Coast Guard and the Royal Canadian Navy, and its Vancouver Drydock repair yard is on the north shore too. Neptune Terminals describes itself as a bulk shipping terminal on the north shore of Burrard Inlet, handling potash and steelmaking coal. Nearby, the Low Level Road Project realigned and raised about 2.6 kilometres of road between St. Georges Avenue and 3rd Street East, opened in 2014, to carry two new rail tracks and a grade separation for the Neptune and Cargill terminals.

We do not paint ships. Our industrial painting for waterfront yards and warehouses covers the buildings and structures around a working waterfront: concrete floors, structural steel, corrosion protection and large facilities, planned around live operations.

Industrial sites get a site assessment before we quote. Tell us what the surfaces face, whether that is salt air, forklift traffic or moisture, and we choose the coating approach to match. A larger building is often easier to plan in sections, so the rest of the site keeps running.

Offices, workshops and showrooms sit alongside the heavy industry. Commercial painters working in an occupied building have to plan around staff and customers, so our commercial painting for North Shore offices and workshops is scheduled around your hours and confirmed with you at the estimate.

Lower Lonsdale, Lonsdale Quay and The Shipyards: Painting Shops, Offices and Strata Near the Waterfront

Lower Lonsdale is where the waterfront has been reworked as public space. According to 2019 reports, the City chose Quay Property Management, the company behind Lonsdale Quay Market, as its partner on Lot 5 of The Shipyards, and a 1925 machine shop was taken apart and rebuilt as a canopy over a public space for markets and events. The same reports described new retail and restaurant buildings and a boutique hotel on the site, so the neighbourhood has plenty of new storefronts.

Storefronts near a busy waterfront get judged at a glance. We plan retail and office repaints around opening hours, and we finish customer-facing areas before you open. If you are fitting out a new space, tell us the date you get the keys and the date you plan to open, and we plan back from the opening.

Condos and strata buildings near the Quay need a different approach. Tell us the council's rules on approvals, elevator bookings and quiet hours early, and we build the schedule around them. We paint hallways, lobbies and suites in sections, so residents know what is happening and when.

Central Lonsdale's Register Houses: Check the Heritage Listing Before You Repaint

The City of North Vancouver keeps a Heritage Register, adopted from its Heritage Inventory, and ranks listed buildings A or B, with A considered to have more merit. Listing alone does not stop demolition, but changes to an A building are flagged for further staff review. A house that has been designated by bylaw is protected from alteration, damage and demolition unless a Heritage Alteration Permit is issued.

One example is the 1909 Arts and Crafts Knowles Residence at 328 West 14th Street, ranked A on the Register. The City's project page records a Heritage Revitalization Agreement application there, to convert the house into a duplex and add an infill duplex, with a council date of February 8, 2023.

The City's heritage pages do not say whether repainting needs approval, so we treat it as a question for the City. Call the City before you choose colours, send us any designation bylaw or agreement you have, and we build it into the estimate. For older houses, our siding, trim and fascia work on Central Lonsdale homes covers the exterior painting side, including the repairs that come first.

Two Municipalities, Two Rulebooks: Working Hours in the City and the District of North Vancouver

North Vancouver is split between the City of North Vancouver, around Lonsdale and the waterfront, and the District of North Vancouver, which includes Lynn Valley. Your address decides which noise bylaw applies to the job. The two bylaws are not the same.

In the City, the March 2026 Construction Activity Hours notice sets 7 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, with Sundays and statutory holidays prohibited. The notice lists painting as construction activity, along with clean up, delivery of materials and the arrival and departure of contractors and trades. Fines apply to sites that break the hours, and work outside them needs an exemption applied for in advance.

In the District, Noise Regulation Bylaw 7188 prohibits construction noise at night, from 8 pm to 7 am. It also prohibits construction noise on construction projects on Sundays and statutory holidays, and before 9 am or after 5 pm on Saturdays. A construction project is work on a building or structure of more than 500 square feet, and the bylaw caps construction noise at 80 decibels at the point of reception during the day.

We plan jobs inside the stricter of the two sets of hours and confirm the daily start time at the estimate. We keep crew arrivals after the weekday start as well, because the City counts the arrival of contractors and trades.

What an Estimate Covers for a Lonsdale House or a Low Level Road Unit

House with painted green stucco walls and wood trim

An estimate starts with the address, which tells us whether the City or the District applies, and the type of property. Call (604) 374-0000 or send the details through our website, and add the year the building was built if you know it. We visit, look at the surfaces and quote a clear price before anything is booked, as any painting contractor should.

For a Central Lonsdale house, our house painters look at the siding, the trim, any rot and the age of the existing paint, and we ask about any heritage listing. For a unit near Low Level Road, we walk the site with whoever manages it and agree the hours, the access and the areas that must stay clear. For interior painting in a Lower Lonsdale suite, we ask for the strata council's rules before we set a start date.

Many owners near the inlet ask about more than one city. We cover Vancouver's character houses and Broadway corridor on one page, painting around Metrotown and Burnaby's business centres on another, and Richmond's Steveston permits and Mitchell Island units on a third, with New Westminster's hospital district and heritage streets on a fourth.

Questions About City and District Rules, Register Houses and Waterfront Industrial Sites in North Vancouver

Which working hours apply to my job in North Vancouver?

It depends on whether your address is in the City or the District of North Vancouver. The City's notice allows work from 7 am to 8 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, and the District's bylaw bars construction noise from 8 pm to 7 am. We ask for the address at the estimate and plan to the stricter rule.

Does the City count painting as construction?

Yes. The City's Construction Activity Hours notice lists painting among construction activity, along with maintenance, clean up and delivery of materials. It also counts the arrival and departure of contractors and trades. We schedule crews to arrive inside the permitted hours.

Can you paint on a Saturday in North Vancouver?

In the City, Saturday work is allowed from 9 am to 5 pm. In the District, construction noise on a construction project is barred before 9 am and after 5 pm on Saturdays. We plan Saturday work inside those hours and confirm it with you.

Can you work on a Sunday or a statutory holiday?

The City prohibits construction activity on Sundays and statutory holidays. The District bars construction noise on construction projects, meaning work on a building or structure of more than 500 square feet, on those days. Ask us about your property and we will tell you what applies before we book a date.

My house is on the City's Heritage Register. Can I repaint it?

The City's heritage pages do not say whether repainting needs approval. A listed house is not automatically protected, but changes to an A building are flagged for staff review, and a designated house needs a Heritage Alteration Permit for any alteration. Ask the City before you choose colours, and send us any paperwork so we can build it into the estimate.

What is the difference between a listed house and a designated house?

Listing on the Heritage Register identifies a heritage resource but does not by itself protect it. Designation is a bylaw that protects the property from alteration, damage and demolition unless a Heritage Alteration Permit is issued. If you are not sure which applies, the City's heritage staff can tell you.

Do you paint industrial buildings near Low Level Road and the terminals?

Yes, we take industrial work. We assess the site first, choose the coating approach for the exposure and plan the work in sections so operations continue. We do not paint ships, but floors, structural steel and large buildings are part of our industrial painting.

Can you paint a shop or office in Lower Lonsdale around opening hours?

Yes, we plan retail and office repaints around your hours and finish customer-facing areas before you open. Give us your closing time and your opening date, and we plan back from them. We confirm the schedule at the estimate.

Do you work in strata buildings near Lonsdale Quay?

Yes, strata and multi-unit painting is part of our work. Tell us the council's rules on approvals, elevator bookings and quiet hours, and we plan the schedule around them, in sections if the job is large.

How do I get an estimate for a North Vancouver job?

Call (604) 374-0000 or send the details through our website. We visit, look at the surfaces and give you a clear price before any work is booked. Estimates are free.
